Project: Mystic River Bascule Bridge Rehabilitation
Location: Mystic, Connecticut
Category: Historic Infrastructure — Steel Bridge Coating & Restoration
Project Overview
Gemstone Industrial Services proudly completed the restoration and recoating of the iconic Mystic River Bascule Bridge, a historic steel drawbridge built in 1922. As one of New England’s most photographed and mechanically complex bridges, the project presented a rare intersection of preservation, performance, and precision.
Scope of Work
Full containment and lead abatement in compliance with EPA and OSHA standards
SSPC/NACE surface preparation on all structural steel
Application of a multi-coat protective coating system designed to withstand coastal exposure
Work completed under strict environmental regulations due to the tidal river ecosystem
Complex scheduling to accommodate pedestrian traffic, tourism, and bridge lifts
Project Challenges & Innovation
Historic preservation requirements demanded minimal visual change to surface profiles while achieving modern corrosion resistance.
The bascule design required phased work zones and specialized rigging to access mechanical counterweights and moving parts.
Environmental compliance included full negative air pressure containment and daily marine life protection protocols.
Our team implemented non-destructive adhesion testing and high-performance coatings specified for historic infrastructure, exceeding performance standards.
Gemstone Industrial Services not only extended the lifespan of this landmark but preserved its legacy for future generations.
