Special Project Highlight: Complex Bridge Rehabilitation Under Active Traffic
Gemstone Industrial Services is proud to showcase a challenging bridge preservation project involving two unique structures—a pony truss swing bridge and a lift bridge—executed under active traffic conditions. This project highlights the level of planning, coordination, and technical expertise required to deliver high-quality results in a constrained, high-demand environment.
Navigating a Complex Scope
The project consists of two inoperable bridge structures; however, all internal machinery remains in place. This adds a significant layer of complexity to both abrasive blasting and coating operations, requiring careful navigation around sensitive components while maintaining strict quality standards.
Working Within Tight Constraints
Execution on this project is driven by strict operational limitations. Work is limited to single lane closures from 9 PM to 5 AM, Monday through Friday, requiring precise scheduling and efficient execution during overnight shifts.
Additional challenges include:
Grated bridge decks that must be fully protected during abrasive blasting
Continuous exposure to traffic and environmental conditions
Ongoing surface preparation and cleanup between coating phases
These conditions demand a disciplined approach to ensure both safety and project timelines are maintained.
Technical Execution
To meet the project’s performance requirements, Gemstone is performing a SP-10 Near White Metal Abrasive Blast, followed by the application of a high-performance OZEU coating system.
The system also includes:
Two stripe coats of aluminum epoxy mastic for enhanced edge and weld protection
Caulking of all crevices greater than 1/8 inch to prevent moisture intrusion and extend coating life
This comprehensive approach ensures long-term durability and protection for critical infrastructure components.
